Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program

The (Doctor of Philosophy) Ph.D. Program is offered by the University in management and allied areas. Degree will be awarded to those candidates who, as per the regulations, have submitted a thesis on the basis of original and independent research in the management and allied disciplines that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in those areas. Every candidate who is provisionally registered for the Ph.D Program shall undergo course work in the first year. On completion of the course work, the University will conduct an examination of 100 marks for each subject. A candidate securing a minimum of 5.5 on a 10 point scale will only be considered eligible for final registration. Candidates, who have completed M.Phil in a particular discipline, shall be exempted from the coursework of the Ph.D. program, provided the candidate has registered for the Ph.D. program in the same discipline.

The number of seats



For purpose of admissions into the Ph.D. program a candidate should have obtained a Masters Degree in the discipline in which he / she wants to register for Ph.D. program with a minimum of 55% marks (5% relaxation for SC/ST Candidates) in the qualifying examination under (10+2+3+2) system. Further as per UGC regulations, a candidate who has acquired less than 55% (50% in the case of SC / ST candidates) has to give an undertaking that he / she is not eligible for teaching positions. Candidates residing / working anywhere in India or abroad working in Educational or other Institutions are eligible for registration. The candidate should have a Master's degree or M.Phil degree in the subject of any University recognized by the University Grants Commission / Association of Indian Universities for Part time /External Registration for Ph.D. program offered by ICFAI University Nagaland.

Age limit

There is no age limit for the candidate. The procedure for admission shall be governed by the rules laid by the Academic Council of the University. The procedure shall include entrance test/interview. The interview shall be to determine the competence of the candidate for the proposed research, and to determine the ability to pursue and complete the research agenda in time. Candidates possessing M.Phil degree / NET / JRF / teaching experience in higher education for more than five years, in the subject concerned shall be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test and Interview. After processing the application form, the selected candidates will be given provisional registration for Ph.D.

Duration of Research

A candidate who has registered for Ph.D. program (with Masters Degree) shall undertake the research work for a minimum period of three years and a maximum period of four years. In case of a candidate with M.Phil qualification, the student shall work for a minimum period of two years and a maximum period of four years.

Extension of time for submission of Ph.D. thesis will be granted up to a maximum period of two years on the payment of the fees prescribed from time to time. Such extension will be granted for a duration of six months in the first instance and additional three six monthly extensions may be granted, making a total of two years, subject to payment of extension fee and semester fee at rates prevailing at that time.

Eligibility for M.Phil.

The Candidates must possess a Master's degree in the respective discipline from any institution recognised by the University Grants Commission. All candidates must have a minimum scoring of 55% in the Master's degree or equivalent on a grading scale. The selection of the candidates shall be on the basis of the entrance test and interview. Applicants must submit, along with the application, a brief description (about 500 words) of their proposed topic of research. Preference will be given to candidates who have qualified UGC-NET/ JRF, and the candidates with teaching experience in higher education; subject to fulfilling the entrance test eligibility criteria as determined by the respective Department. All regulations for the M.Phil course are laid as per the UGC Regulations Act, 2016.

General rule

For the purpose of determining eligibility based on aggregate percentage of marks, the procedure used by the respective University in award of the degree will only be taken into consideration. All applicants should have completed a minimum of 15 years of formal schooling by August 01, 2017. Applicants who have completed their graduation on a one-time sitting basis or a 2-year basis are not eligible for admission to the Postgraduate Programs

Students in their final year bachelor's degree course are also eligible to apply, provided they complete their graduation requirements including practical examinations/ viva assignments before August 01, 2017. Such applicants will have to produce a certificate to that effect at the time of admission. The admission of such applicants will, however, remain provisional until they produce mark sheet/ transcript and a degree certificate establishing their eligibility. The last date for submitting the proof of graduation transcripts is September 01, 2017, failing which the provisional admission will automatically stand cancelled, and the permissible fees will be refunded.

The process of admission and selection of eligible candidates

The selection of applicants into the program is made through screening of application and interview. While evaluating students for admission, due weightage is given to their academic distinction, awards in Games & sports, Literary & cultural activities, and other extra co-curricular activities. Original certificates and Domicile certificate should be produced for verification at the time of admission. The admission decision will be communicated after the admission process.

Special Reservation

There shall be a special provision for admission of students belonging to the State of Nagaland (Domicile) in any course of ICFAI University, Nagaland, which shall not be less than 25 (twenty-five) percent of seats in each course/discipline subject to the students meeting the minimum qualifying requirements referred to above. The fee for the Domicile students is less than that of the non-domicile students (please refer the fee chart).

Seats remaining unfilled under special reservation may be filled up by allotting the same to students belonging to Open Category.

Applicants have to enclose attested copies of the following certificates (Attestation should be done by any Gazetted Officer/Principal of the college).

  • Date of Birth Certificate /Class X Certificate
  • Marks sheets of Class XII / Diploma / Degree certificate (as may be applicable)
  • Domicile Certificate in case of student belonging to the State of Sikkim
  • Nationality Certificate/Proof, for foreign students only
  • Other certificates pertaining to academic and extra curricular activities.
